New Delhi: Food allergies affect a lot of people worldwide, and most of the time they are not even aware of what food does not suit them. Food allergy symptoms are the most common in small children, however, we do not care for them too much. Allergies can also be developed at any age and with food that you have been eating for a long time.

What are the signs of food allergy?

A food allergy reaction typically occurs when the immune system fights off a food substance thinking it is a danger and triggers a protective response. Most allergies are hereditary and run-in families; however, it is not necessary that the parents and children have the same aversion to foods.

There are several signs and symptoms of food allergy, that include:

  • Severe cough
  • Watery eyes
  • Itching all over the body
  • Boils and small breakouts
  • Rash
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach or headache
  • Hives
  • Breathlessness

Anaphylaxis is among the most severe allergic reactions to food which can also be life-threatening and can impact breathing or drop in blood pressure.

Types of food that can cause allergies

  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts
  • Fish
  • Soy beans

Many food-related allergies can happen within an hour or two of eating food. Other reactions, especially in small children, include symptoms of eczema and other skin reactions.

Replacements for allergy-inducing foods

Coconut, almond, or soy milk for dairy
Mashed bananas and apple puree for eggs

Almonds or oats instead of peanuts

Coconut flour, almond flour, or oat flour instead of wheat flour

Flax seed oil instead of fish

Apple cider vinegar for citrus fruits
