Considering that Muslims make up 24% of the global population and wield a spending power estimated in trillions, one would think there would be a greater presence of products tailored to their needs.

And yet, you’d sooner find Waldo than a halal-certified skincare product at your local store.

Flora & Noor founder Jordan Karim is on a mission to change that.

“There’s a whole community that’s missing out when it comes to skincare,” says the Chicago-based entrepreneur.

After working as a research chemist and pharmaceutical consultant for almost ten years for skincare giants like Johnson & Johnson and SkinCeuticals, Karim realized Muslims “can’t use the majority, if any, of the skincare products on the shelves today in good conscience” since they aren’t halal.

“We are using them anyway. Either because we don’t know we’re not supposed to, which I have learned in doing this, is a lot common. Or, we’ve just settled [which] we shouldn’t have to,” she says.
